Touchdown Live Game of the Week - Iowa Preview
IOWA, La. (KPLC) - The Iowa Yellowjackets are heading into week nine trying to do the exact same thing they did last season, beat the St. Louis Catholic Saints to win a 3-3A-District Championship, and Head Coach of the Yellowjackets Tommy Johns understands the challenge of taking on a Saints team that has had one of the top defenses in the entire state of Louisiana.
“They’ve got a lot of guys back from last year, I want to say like 18 to 19 starters with around 21 seniors, so you expect them to be in this position, they’ve only lost one game and it was really close football game against Vidor, but they’re mean they’re a heck of a football team,” said Coach Johns. “We’re fortunate to be in the situation that we’re in to be able to play those guys for another title.”
There is respect between these two teams as they have been the class of the district over the past couple of years, and the players know that they are going to have to come out fast if they want to have a chance to win this game.
“The challenge is really going to be who can do it first if we come out there the first drive and we punch it in, that could turn the whole ball game around,” said Senior Tight End Cole Corbello. “As long as we go out there the first drive and take it to them then it will be alright.”
“I think they are going to bring physicality, they’re going to have a beat us type of energy, so I think we have to match that and overcome it,” said Senior Quarterback Josiah Bushnell. “I think that would be the tipping point for us.”
Coach Johns has been proud of how this team has improved with so many new pieces this season, and he knows that with that hard work they will have a good opportunity to reap the benefits.
“That’s what you work for all year, that was the whole goal, coming in was to put yourself in this position, and I’m proud of these guys especially with how we started the season, we had our struggles early on, but we’re getting better and better each week and that’s what you want to see,” said Coach Johns. “All of these guys that have come in the new faces, they’ve really gotten better and the older guys have done a great job of helping them along and I think that’s the main reason we’re in the position that we are right now.”
Iowa will take on St. Louis at 7:00 p.m. this coming Friday with the chance to put themselves once again at the top of the district.
