LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The Lake Charles Fire Department responded to a fire at an animal rescue facility on Corbina Road around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire burned a residence located on the property of the Safe From Slaughter Equine Rescue, a nonprofit organization that rescues and rehabilitates animals.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Travis Delano, their department was able to extinguish the fire around 1:30 p.m.

Three cats died in the fire, although the horses, donkeys pigs and other animals sheltered outside were uninjured.

The founder of the nonprofit, Katie Roush, said her mother lived at the residence on the property, and she lost everything. Feed and medical supplies for the animals were among the items lost in the fire, as well.
